Only two members showed up today to hunt, Wayne Owen and me. Wayne
had four guests so we took his boat and mine. We hunted together
and went to hole 5.
About 6:45 a.m. five Mallards started working our hole. After a
couple of circles they fell in the hole just to the north of the
blind. Wayne and friends worked on them and three out of the five,
all drakes, fell to their guns.
At 7:30 a.m. Wayne and I heard some Gadwalls binking behind us.
This is the sound they make, "bink, bink, bink". Wayne says they
sound like taxi-cabs and act like taxi-cabs, also. We called at the
Gadwalls and gave up on them because we never saw them. Shortly
after that, two Mallards came gliding into the hole from behind the
blind and both of them got shot. Wayne said, "Those are the
strangest looking Gadwalls I have ever seen".
Later in the morning about 9:30 a.m. I saw three Mallards coming
from the north and heading south across our hole. I started calling
to them and they made several circles. At one point I thought we
had lost them, but now instead of three Mallards, only one Mallard
drake stayed with me. He made one circle and glided into the south
end of the hole where I was waiting for him. I shot at him through
some brush in front of me and missed, then I killed him with my
second shot when he came clear of all the obstructions.
That duck made our sixth Mallard and we were through for the day
except for looking a lot of empty clear blue skies.
We don't know where the ducks are!!! But Wayne and I will be
waiting for them!
More later.
