I had two friends, Clay Connor and Wes Roberson, from Memphis in today to hunt in the green timber. They had field hunted the previous day in northeastern Arkansas so they wanted to see some timber hunting. Also, joining us today was Jay "Pipe" Lawrence, David Breedlove, Scott Barnette, and Wes Wright.
The hunting was slow. Wes Wright got a single Mallard drake early and we got another mallard a little bit later.
Then some volunteer Teal buzzed in two different times and we wound up with 5 of them. Then one event made our
day. Eight Mallards showed up and circled our hole two or three times. They finally committed after Scott
Barnette sweet talked them down. They waffled down directly in front of our blind and when the smoke cleared
after I said "Take 'em", we picked up 7 dead Mallards. Only one hen escaped. That gave us a total of 14 ducks
for the day.
It made me feel good to show my guests the very essence of timber hunting. It doesn't get any better than that.
By the way, Wes Roberson was a substitute for Tracy Salmon, so Tracy, our friend Clay Connor said, "Eat your
heart out".
More later,
Royce
