It takes a longer time to get to hole 9 and we had to pull our boat
over from the north to south canal, so we were late getting setup.
Wood Ducks were landing in the hole before we could load our guns.
A pair of Mallards also landed before we were ready.
Finally David Breedlove and I got set up to hunt. Wes Wright, our
friend and hunting partner the first five days bailed out on us and
drove back to Harrison to have Thanksgiving with his wife and her
family, so David and I hunted without him today. We were even
hoping to shoot his limit today, but that didn't happen. The first
group to come in was one Mallard drake and two hens. David and I
were more than ready and we got all three of them. Our dogs enjoyed
getting to retrieve them. A little while later a big group of Wood
Ducks slipped in on us. David was behind the blind taking care of
personal business. Nearly all of the Wood Ducks landed outside of
the hole. I made them fly and was only able to get a hen out of
maybe a dozen Wood Ducks.
About 9:00 a. m., David saw three Mallards come over from behind us
and gave them a come-back call. They wheeled around and dropped
into the hole right in front of us. We killed 2 drakes and let the
hen go because we already had our limit of Mallard hens. We didn't
know it at the time, but the hunting was over for the morning for us
and we wound up with six for the day.
More later.
