The hunting at Winchester continues to be slow. We know that there are ducks in our area working the fields and we are continuing to expect them to start flying the timber every day. But, today was not the day for that.

Wayne Owen went to hole 15 and posted one duck killed. Chuck Tlapek and Larkin Wilson went to the reservoir and killed two ducks. We wound up with four Mallards in hole 6.

About 7:00 a.m. a pair of Mallards glided into the hole, coming over the top of the blind. We knew another duck was with them and waited on it. Sure enough, a Mallard drake made a circle and came in the same way. The ducks landed as far away from us as they could and still stay in the hole, but we had enough firepower with Noel Ferguson, Greg Seale, Wes Wright, and me. Two ducks got knocked down in the hole way out in front of the blind. A hen foolishly flew back toward us late and Wes had reloaded and was ready.

C. J. picked up a drake out front and brought it back to me. She then found the hen in back of the blind. Greg knew another duck went down out front, so he and I took C. J. back out front. She searched around and finally scented the third duck, a drake, under a fallen tree. She is still continuing to improve and I am proud of her.

About 11:00 a.m. three Mallards circled our hole. A pair left us, but a drake stayed with us and finally came in from behind the blind. It should have been an easy shot for me, but I only drew feathers and Noel killed it for me. That made our fourth duck and finished the hunt for us.

More later,

Royce
