The new year came in as a dud as far as duck hunting for me goes.
Bobby Burch had called me last night and we decided to hunt together this morning. He brought a friend, Mike Reeves, with him. Mike is the new Superintendent of Schools for Drew Central in Monticello, Arkansas. Mike told us that he has been hunting Seven Devils and that hunting a private place like ours is a treat for him.
It was cloudy and overcast this morning with good visibility. We chose hole 15 on the far south end of our timber. Wayne Owen chose hole 12, and Michael Schrader chose hole 5. Michael forgot his Robo duck so he borrowed one of my floater Robos. I noticed that he posted a zero so I guess that I was not much help to him.
We shot three Mergansers early this morning. Then a single Mallard drake worked our hole. He did not commit to land, but he did drop in low enough for us to have a good shot. You guessed it. We were not smart to take advantage of that opportunity and he flew off to live another day unless he went to hole 12.
Wayne and his group shot five Mergansers and one Mallard drake. I wonder. Could that have been the same drake we let fly off. We will never know!
More later,
Royce
